Office Procedures

We offer our patients a variety of office procedures for their convenience and comfort. Advantages include rapid recovery, minimal discomfort, and decreased costs to our patients in many cases.

Some of the procedures we commonly perform in the office include:

ESSURE® Sterilization- quick, efficacious alternative to traditional sterilization without the need for invasive surgery. This technique is performed through a small camera that is inserted through the natural opening of the cervix. No incisions are required and patients experience almost no discomfort. The total procedure typically lasts less than 5 minutes. We have performed hundreds of these procedures with very good results.
Endometrial Ablation- technological breakthrough in the management of abnormal uterine bleeding, often times an alternative to hysterectomy. Although the technology is new, the concept of endometrial ablation has been around for many years. The concept involves destroying the endometrium, which is the tissue layer that normally responds to hormones and is responsible for uterine bleeding. By removing this layer, the patient retains normal hormonal function, but without the bleeding. Some of the most common modern endometrial ablation devices include the Novasure, Thermachoice, Heroption, and others.

LEEP- treatment of pre-cancer of the cervix. This treatment is reserved for patients who may be at risk of developing cervical cancer and involves removal of the tissue with the affected cells. The patient experiences minimal discomfort and can resume her normal activities immediately. As in all procedures, patients need to continue with follow up as scheduled to assure successful treatment. We DO NOT advocate the use of cryotherapy, which is an antiquated approach to managing pre-cancerous cells of the cervix.
Call today and make an appointment to see if you are a candidate for our office procedures. We will explain all your options in detail, so that you make informed decisions about your healthcare.

High Risk Pregnancy Doctors in Miami

By | January 4th, 2013|Categories: High Risk Pregnancy|Tags: , , , , |

High risk pregnancy is a very common term used by doctors in Miami during conversations with pregnant patients. Often time, physicians over utilize the term and in turn may cause unnecessary stress and concern. The term can be loosely applied to so many conditions that you can almost diagnose anybody as “high risk”. The reality is that “high risk pregnancy” has far more value as a medical coding term for insurance companies than it does for a physician.

Instead of “high risk”, I believe patients need to understand the proper term for their diagnosis and what are the medical implications of the diagnosis. There is no denying that patients are more and more educated on medical conditions and they deserve clear guidance on their medical condition.

As physicians, we have an obligation to communicate with patients and be prepared to answer questions in a way that patients may understand. When a patient understands the actual medical condition, they are more likely to make better treatment decisions and more likely to be compliant with their care plan. This has been our philosophy at Bayshore Womens Healthcare, and our patients agree.

In this series of posts, let’s talk about some common “high risk” pregnancy conditions and what they mean. The goal is a general orientation, and in no way will serve as a substitute for medical evaluation and management by one of our Board Certified OB/GYN physicians.

Feel free to post questions and comments

Tricare OB GYN Miami

By | September 27th, 2012|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , |

Tricare Standard patients in Miami now have a new choice in obstetrics and gynecology. At Bayshore Women’s Healthcare, we believe that our nation’s heroes and their families deserve the finest care possible and we take pride in being able to serve those families that serve our nation. Some of our staff, including Dr Cardenas, are combat veterans that understand the hardships faced by military families.

South Florida is home to every branch of the military and to hundreds of military families. Unlike cities near major military hospitals, military families in Miami are limited in options for obstetrics and gynecology. Deployments, change of duty stations, and geographic isolation from family can be a major source of stress for a military mom. We understand the language and challenges of military life and we will provide the support, communication, and continuity that all patients deserve.

We look forward to taking care of those that take care of our nation. If you are a military dependent, contact your Tricare office and learn about Tricare Standard and if it is the right option for you.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Miami: Just another cosmetic procedure?

By | September 13th, 2012|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Do You Really Talk to Your Gynecologist?

Whether its botox, breasts, or Brazilian butt lifts, Miami loves to look good. In fact, inhabitants of this great city spend millions of dollars every year in the search of the perfect look. We can debate the ethics, negative social pressure, and psychological benefits of cosmetic surgery all day, but the fact remains that plastic surgery is a well established part of modern medicine.

However, there is another realm of cosmetic surgery that rarely is in the spotlight but is gaining popularity as patients become more informed and open to discussion of intimate issues.

The term cosmetic gynecology applies to several procedures involving the lips, opening, and inside of the vagina. It is sometimes marketed under the term vaginal rejuvenation. It is cosmetic in the sense of altering appearance, but unlike many cosmetic procedures, the majority of patients also benefit from a functional improvement. The conditions that are addressed range from dissatisfaction with vaginal appearance, unsatisfactory sexual relationships, loss of urine or feces, or painful intercourse. Many of these complaints are the result of damage caused by child birth or due to pre-existing weak vaginal tissue.

Traditional gynecology has focused training on surgeries that address only loss of urine or feces, without an appropriate emphasis on appearance or sexual satisfaction. This results in patients having only some of their symptoms addressed when undergoing surgery.

The reality is that patients are complex and their issues are very individualized. What may seem as a minor problem to one patient may be a life altering condition to another. A common example is enlarged or uneven vaginal lips. Although a normal variant in many women, for some it can cause a negative self image and in some cases can cause pain with certain clothing or intercourse. Women are often times reluctant to discuss these concerns with their partner or her physician. The result could be a lifetime of unhappiness due to an easily correctable issue.

Loss of urine and sexual dissatisfaction are other concerns that many women are reluctant to discuss. I tend to see patients vocalize these issues when they are older, but almost all will admit that the issue began several years before. Sometimes, the lack of mutually satisfactory intercourse results in marital problems, especially when there is poor communication as a couple. Correcting these issues as early as possible also produces better results since the tissue is healthier and heals better.

In summary, cosmetic gynecology is a somewhat confusing term that involves much more than physical appearance as the name would imply. Whether addressed as cosmetic gynecology, vaginal rejuvenation, or vaginal repair, the surgeon needs to individualize the procedure to the patient’s needs. Advances in modern medicine are driven by the patient; who relies on the increase in access to medical education. Our society has also become more open to discussions of what used to be very intimate, often taboo topics. Progressive gynecologists have a responsibility to invite open conversation with their patients and to never dismiss a patient complaint as frivolous or unimportant.

There’s a Robot on my Uterus!

Bayshore Banner 1

Bayshore Banner 1

So maybe the title is somewhat misleading, but our readers can appreciate the humor in what some patients may think about robotic surgery.

The fact is that robotic surgery is here in Miami and it is here to stay. A growing number of patients are realizing that major gynecologic surgery does not have to result in prolonged hospitalization, pain, and unpleasant scars. In fact, patients undergoing robotic surgery such as a hysterectomy can expect to be home the next morning after surgery. Because the incisions are small and the movements are precise, the patient can expect very minimal post operative discomfort.

Bayshore Womens Healthcare is committed to providing state of the art medicine to our patients. Our patients know that they are being offered the highest quality procedures by a team of skilled professionals dedicated to their health. All our providers are Board Certified and experts in  minimally invasive surgery including the da Vinci Robotic system.

Please read this recent editorial from the Kendall Gazette, where Dr Cardenas reviews the basics of robotic surgery.
